Post-launch washdown checklist

Trailer

  • Rinse the whole frame, springs, axles and rollers or bunks with fresh water right after haul-out.
  • Rinse inside the frame rails, where salt collects.
  • Flush the brakes and hubs; many surge-brake trailers have a flush kit.
  • Check the lights and wiring connector for corrosion.

Hull and boat

  • Rinse the hull, deck, rails and hardware with fresh water.
  • Wash with a boat soap, top to bottom; do not let soap dry in the sun.
  • Flush the engine as your manufacturer directs.
  • Dry or air out compartments and covers before storing.

Tow vehicle

  • Rinse the underbody, wheel wells and rear bumper; salt water drips off the trailer onto the vehicle.
  • Rinse the hitch receiver and ball mount.
  • Wash the lower panels soon, before salt dries on.

Brake and hitch care

  • Inspect brake lines and pads for rust.
  • Lightly lubricate the hitch ball and coupler as the maker recommends.
  • Check safety chains, the coupler latch and the breakaway cable.
  • Check tire pressure and wheel bearings before long trips.

Signs of gelcoat oxidation

  • Chalky residue that comes off on your hand.
  • Faded or dull color, especially on surfaces facing the sun.
  • Water no longer beads on the surface.
  • Light oxidation can often be polished out; heavy oxidation needs professional correction.
