Yes. Wheels and painted brake calipers can be ceramic coated, and it makes brake dust, road grime and salt film much easier to rinse off. At Shine My Ride 757, System X ceramic coating for the paint starts at $1,400, and wheel and caliper coating is quoted when you book.
Why ceramic coat wheels and brake calipers?
Wheels take the worst dirt on a car. Brake dust is hot, sticky and slightly abrasive, and it bakes onto the wheel face and barrel every time you stop. Around Hampton Roads, wheels also pick up salt film near the water and road grime from I-64 and I-264 traffic.
A ceramic layer makes the wheel surface slicker, so that buildup has less to grip. Instead of scrubbing with harsh wheel cleaners, most of it comes off with a gentle soap and a rinse. Coated calipers stay cleaner too and keep their color looking sharp behind the spokes.
How is ceramic coating applied to wheels and calipers?
The best results come with the wheels off the car, so the faces, barrels and calipers can all be reached. Each surface is deep cleaned, iron deposits are removed, and the surface is prepped so the coating can bond. Then the coating is applied and left to cure.
Prep matters more than the coating itself. Any brake dust left in the pores of the finish gets sealed in, so we take our time on cleanup first. If your wheels have curb rash or peeling finish, that needs repair by a wheel shop before coating, since ceramic won't hide damage.
Does ceramic coating on wheels handle brake heat?
Wheels and calipers run much hotter than body panels, especially after stop-and-go driving or towing. That is why we use a coating suited to the job and avoid putting product where it doesn't belong. Ceramic never goes on brake rotors or pads, because those surfaces need grip, not slickness.
A coated wheel still needs regular washing. The difference is that each wash is faster and gentler. Pair wheel coating with a full paint coating and the whole car becomes easier to keep clean between details.
